Washington Ceasefire - Self Defense Insurance for Firearms Owners

Self Defense Insurance for Firearms Owners Print E-mail

WashingtonCeasefire.com recommends that anyone who carries a pistol for self protection also carry two types of insurance policy:

  1. Personal liability to protect against frivolous lawsuits filed by criminals or their survivors.  This type of coverage is available through personal umbrella liability policies.  This insurance is remarkably cheap and many people can buy $1,000,000 policies for under $150/year through the same companies that provide home and auto insurance.

  2. Criminal defense reimbursement in the event that you face wrongful criminal charges as a result of your use of a pistol to defend yourself during a crime of violence.  While Washington requires the state to pay for defense legal bills in the case of acquittal (RCW 9A.16.110, Defending against violent crime -  Reimbursement), it is always possible that you can face an over-zealous prosecutor in the event that you are involved in a self-defense shooting outside the state.  Only one company is currently known to provide this type of coverage:  Lockton Risk Services, which makes this coverage only to members of the National Rifle Association.  Item number 8 on the page below illustrates the self defense reimbursement coverage which is available.
